For Best Results Follow Food Storage Guidelines
Food storage guidelines are one of the most significant developments of our modern society. These days many of us who live in the modern industrialized world take food completely for granted and rarely give it much thought or attention, although in the past there have been many famines. In other parts of the world food shortage is a reality and there is a real need for emergency food storage guidelines. A famine can happen quite quickly. All it takes is for the crops to fail one year for many families to know hunger. Their lives are then at risk until the next season's crop is ready.
The most important feature of long term food storage guidelines is that they have the potential to balance food yields. In the past, when a harvest produced a good crop, there was a strong possibility that any surplus food would be wasted as there was no way to preserve it. Then, the following year when the harvest was poor, people would go hungry. The ability to store food has changed all of this completely, and there is no longer any reason why there should not be a constant supply of food. Only political corruption and poor distribution prevents the whole world being fed.
Although levelling out food yields is arguably the most important food storage guideline, it is far from being the only one. There are many people throughout the world who store food on their own initiative and because they believe it is essential to their chances of surviving some kind of catastrophe. There is more to survival than just storing food of course; if you have food while all around you are starving, you are not likely to live much longer than if you had not stored the food in the first place.
By far the most common reason for storing food, though, is simple convenience. The ability to store food allows people to eat fruits which are grown on the other side of the world and to store perishables from their own region until they are ready to be eaten. Which exact storage technique should be used depends on the individual food, and it is important to follow the correct food storage guidelines. Grain, for example, is sometimes mistakenly stored in sacks. This encourages mould and insects which eventually destroy it. Stored grain needs to be in airtight plastic containers.
Canning is the form of food storage which gives the longest extension to the shelf life of most products, thus avoiding the need for a food storage list. Fruit and vegetables are routinely canned, and can be eaten months after they would have perished had they not been preserved. Meat and fish can also be canned, and are safe to eat months later. Canning also preserves the food against risks in the environment, such as insects and other parasites which are unable to penetrate the surface of the tin. Modern fast paced lives benefit greatly from the convenience offered by this form of storage but it is important to follow the correct food storage guidelines.
